: Derek White has Left Nebraska

Image
TOM has learned that Derek White, who was runner-up at the Midlands as a redshirt freshman at 197 pounds a year ago, has left the University of Nebraska. White, who was a highly sought after recruit when he came out of Edmond North High School in Edmond, Oklahoma, spent the past year backing up Aaron Studebaker who returns for his senior season in Lincoln. We have been unable to confirm White’s destination, but it is rumored to be Oklahoma State. White was TOM’s fifth ranked 195-pounder when he came out of high school in 2014 after winning two-state titles and shattering the takedown record at Edmond North, a school that counts Teyon Ware and Charles Jones as alumni. After a solid redshirt year, his freshman campaign was limited due to his backup role, but featured wins over Phil Wellington (Ohio) and Nate Rotert (South Dakota State) while his only losses were to three All-Americans, Brett Harner (Princeton), Nathan Burak (Iowa) and Brett Pfarr (Minnesota). If he does end up suiting

Every sport has a breeding ground for its future stars. In the case of mixed martial arts, the worlds of grappling, kickboxing and amateur wrestling are most likely to spawn the next Demian Maia, Mirko CroCop or Brock Lesnar. Collectively, these sports fall under the umbrella of “combat sports.” Every Wednesday, MMA DieHards reports on the biggest happenings in each of these realms of combat. Grappling & Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by Gianni Grippo, four-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion With the first Jiu-Jitsu spectacle of 2011 in the books, it’s time to recap what went down at the 2011 E uropean Championships.

Top 5 Most Valuable NCAA Wrestlers for 2016-17

Let me be clear, this is not a pound-for-pound ranking. You won’t find Olympic and world champion Kyle Snyder (Ohio State) on this list, despite how incredible he is and the fact that he is a huge favorite to win another NCAA title. This list is all about which NCAA wrestlers will contribute the most, on the mat, to their teams in the coming year. Of course, winning an NCAA title at the end is important. So is dominating throughout the year and putting up as many bonus points as you can along the way. The most valuable wrestlers in the NCAA all have high bonus point rates and are likely to stand on the top of the podium at the end of the year. These are the five most valuable NCAA wrestlers around. 5) Gabe Dean, Senior – Cornell Though he lost his 52-match win streak to Oklahoma State’s Nolan Boyd on February 7th, Dean proved once again he is one of the best at the college level. After a third place finish in 2014, Dean has now won two straight NCAA tournaments at 184 pounds. His ca

Gold Medalist Toghrul Asgarov Tests Positive From 2012 Olympics

Image
The Hindustan Times is reporting that 2012 Olympic gold medalist Toghrul Asgarov (AZE) has also tested positive during re-tests of samples given during that competition and will be stripped of his gold medal.  The report cites a source at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and says the news has not yet been communicated to United World Wrestling (UWW).  If it proves to be true it introduces an interesting question as to who should get the vacated gold medal.  Earlier this week, the 2012 silver medalist at that weight, 60 kg, Besik Kudukhov (RUS) was stripped of his medal after a positive test with Yogeshwar Dutt (IND) promoted to second place.  If Asgarov is stripped of the gold, both Dutt and Coleman Scott (USA) would seem to have equal claim, having won bronze after losing to now disqualified wrestlers. Asgarov also was the runner-up at the 2016 Olympics after beating Frank Molinaro (USA) in the quarters and Frank Chamizo (ITA) in the semi-finals.  Considering the re-testing of

5 Things From the Junior World Championships – Day 4

Image
The final day of women’s freestyle at the 2016 Junior World Championships in Macon, France, featured action in the 48 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg and 72 kg weight classes. Maya Nelson, 63 kg After starting her day with a 10-0 tech-fall over Zarina Dauletkeldi (KAZ), Nelson ran into the Japanese representative, Ayana Gempei in the quarter-finals. The bad news for Nelson was she dropped an 8-3 decision to Gempei. The good news is that the Japanese wrestler made the finals to bring Nelson back into the repechage. There Nelson knocked out Asli Tugcu (TUR), 11-3 to earn her spot in the bronze medal match. In that match-up, against Maria Kuznetsova (RUS), Nelson opened the scoring two minutes in with a shot clock point. The lead was short lived, however, as the Russian responded with a takedown to lead 2-1 at the break. Nelson came out firing in the second, scoring four on the edge on a hop toss 20 seconds in. By a minute into the final frame, Nelson had pushed the lead to 7-2 after another takedo

Canada Keeps Legacy Alive with Gold at Rio Olympics

Image
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – With Erica Wiebe’s gold medal win at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the legacy of Wrestling Canada Lutte winning at least one medal at the Olympics since 1992 lives on. A proud wrestling legacy exists based on the accomplishments of Canadian wrestlers which include: 1992: Jeffrey Thue (130KG)-silver, 1996: Guivi Sissaouri (57KG)-silver, 2000: Daniel Igali (69KG)- gold, 2004: Tonya Verbeek (55KG)- silver, 2008: Carol Huyhn (48KG)– gold, Tonya Verbeek (55KG)– bronze, 2012: Tonya Verbeek (55KG)– silver, Carol Huyhn (48KG)– bronze. Erica Wiebe carried on that tradition in Rio with a gold medal performance that she described as a team effort. “The process to get to the Olympics was so hard but I knew that I had done every single thing I could to wrestle my best on my competition day,” said Wiebe. “My coaches, the #6Pack, the small and tight knit wrestling community supported me and we won this gold medal for Canada and am so honoured to be part of this wrestlin

The 2016 Rio Olympics are now history. Sadly, it seemed that too much attention was spent on sideshow elements. Medal-winning swimmers vandalizing a gas station restroom, then concocting a story that they were robbed at gunpoint. A soccer goalie whose sour-grapes comments in defeat said more about her character than the quality of her play. Wrestling coaches who expressed their frustration over an official's call by stripping off their clothes on the mat. It wasn't all bad behavior in Brazil. In fact, the U.S. wrestling community can take pride in the words expressed by some of its Olympic mat stars and members of their families who were truly gracious in thrilling victory ... and in heartbreaking defeat. I'm Helen Maroulis Helen Maroulis made history by becoming the first Team USA women's freestyle wrestler to win an Olympic gold medal ... and she did it by defeating one of the all-time greats in Saori Yoshida of Japan who was going for her fourth consecutive O

Oklahoma Wrestling

Oklahoma wrestling program has long, rich, successful history With the recent announcement of Lou Rosselli as Oklahoma's new head wrestling coach, InterMat senior writer Mark Palmer examines the history of the Sooner wrestling program. Now that it's official -- Lou Rosselli is the new head wrestling coach at the University of Oklahoma -- the question has to be asked: what kind of program is the long-time staff member at Ohio State and Edinboro University inheriting?  Despite some recent struggles, the Sooner wrestling program has a long, rich, successful history spanning nearly a century. A number of top wrestlers have competed for Oklahoma, including NCAA champs of the past decade such as Cody Brewer (2015), Kendric Maple (2013) and Teyon Ware (2003, 2005) ... 1980s legends such as Melvin Douglas, Dan Chaid, Dave Schultz, Mark Schultz and Andre Metzger ... 1960s superstars such as Wayne Wells, Wayne Baughman, Mike Grant ... and greats of the 1950s, including Dick De

There will never be an opportunity like this, and I’d like to take part if I’m able.” Yoshida, 33, could take a break from competition and return later in the Olympic cycle. “I still have four years, and one way of thinking is to aim to make the national team after not competing for one or two years,” she said, according to the report. Yoshida planned ahead of the Rio Games that she would retire afterward, wrestling experts said earlier this summer. Everything changed in the Rio 53kg final, when Maroulis handed Yoshida her first loss in four years, her third senior international loss in more than a decade of wrestling at that level and her first defeat in 17 combined Olympics and world championships.

Tears Of A Champion: Jordan Burroughs Loses Bid For Second Straight Olympic Gold Medal

Image
Due to a random draw, the No. 1-ranked Burroughs, who came in considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound wrestler in the world, faced a formidable opponent in the quarterfinals. Russia’s Aniuar Geduev, ranked No. 2 in the world, defeated Burroughs 3-2, giving him a bloody cut on the forehead in the process. Burroughs, 28, was then in the uncomfortable position of pulling for Geduev to advance to the final, which he did, putting Burroughs into the repechage. However, Burroughs lost convincingly to No. 10 Bekzod Abdurakhmonov of Uzbekistan 11-1, and suddenly the Games were over for him. “This is supposed to be my year,” Burroughs almost whispered, a tear streaking down his cheek. “This is supposed to be my breakthrough performance, cementing me as a legend in the sport. And I almost retracted my position in the sport. It hurts me. It hurts a lot, man.”
