Yenagoa  –   The 2nd  edition of Gov. Seriake Dickson’s  National Wrestling Classics started on Thursday with all participants from the 36 states of the country doing  weigh-in exercises.

As at the time of filling this report, the total number of participants could not be ascertained because some wrestlers were yet to be at the venue.

Igali said that some of them would have added some weight or dropped some after the last classification carried out on them by the federation.
“The weigh-in is to ensure that the wrestlers compete in categories appropriate to them because it’s the categories they compete-in now that they will be registered for at international competitions.
“The classics is for both male and female athletes and it’s being handled by the best hands in wrestling to ensure that we achieve the utmost result, ” he said.
The 2000 Sydney Olympics gold medalist said that wrestlers would compete in three styles.
“They are the Greco-Roman, Freestyle and Female wrestling. Each style will have 10 weight classes,’’ Igali said, adding that each style starts and finishes competing in one day.
Igali, who is also a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, added that the wrestlers who emerged tops at the end of the competition would form the national team for 2017.
“ The main aim of the competition is to select the formidable national team for the year. We always strive to ensure that the national team is selected on present current form, ” he said.
NAN observed that the participants took turns to exercise and train on mats ahead of the competition proper which starts on Friday (tomorrow).
They wore determined faces and were ready to fight for spaces in the national team.
They were not worried or discouraged by the current downpour in the city.
